Gorillaz – Something of a legend

Music ON … Good! Let’s start, I was just going through my music play list and fortunately I fall on that strange artist name “Gorillaz” . Wow … a new music discovery, Clint Eastwood, one of their songs was really good. The song was very eclectic with a western vibe, lol. A quick look on Last FM and here’s some information about the band:

About Gorillaz
“Gorillaz is a virtual band created in 1998 by Damon Albarn of alternative rock band Blur, and Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl. The band is composed of four animated band members: 2D(vocals, keyboard), Murdoc (bass guitar), Noodle (lead guitar and occasional vocals) and Russel (drums and percussion).”
Their style is mainly alternative rock with a mixture of dub, electronic and some hip hop too. A quick look at Google to find more about the band, hmm interesting … they even made an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Most Successful Virtual Band. The group consists of 4 funny cartoons Murdoc, 2D, Noodle and Russel, brought to life by comic-book creator Jamie Hewlett (“Tank Girl”).
The group debuted in late 2000 with “Clint Eastwood” as their first single and which put them in the public eye. Now let’s talk about the characters:
|
Murdoc
He is the self-proclaimed ‘leader’ of the band and often makes attempts to bully the other members into doing things his way. He’s also something of a womaniser. Despite these grave personality flaws, he also manages to be highly amusing through his use of creative insults and misanthropic rants.

2D
He has big hands and long fingers. Despite missing his two front teeth, 2D can sing clearly. His speech, while still mainly clear, has a definite Cockney (or thereabouts) accent: he says “summfink” instead of “something”, and “fing” instead of “thing.”

Noodle
Noodle could only speak Japanese and she is a fan of Miyazaki movies. She went on to sing the entire track for “Dare” and to be the only band member to star in two music videos by herself “Dare” and “El Manana”.

Russel
Russel is severely unhinged. This may be a result of his frequent trauma from numerous possessions. His mental state has deteriorated noticeably since Del’s exorcism. Despite his mental status, Russel is known to be a very eloquent speaker, largely due to the private schooling he received in his youth. Russel has also seen the Grim Reaper twice.

To conclude, they’re weird, they’re incredibly weird, they’re the most successful virtual band in history and they’re very good with their awesome music. I love the whole idea behind it, the originality, the music and the artwork makes it more interesting. Unlike people, cartoons never let you down, lol.
